Be Part of Benissa’s Village!

Get Involved

Your involvement can be a bloodline to keep the arts and culture very much alive in our local area. You will be making a bold statement in supporting professional and aspiring artists. Below are ways you can support Benissa’s Village.

Volunteer With Us

Benissa’s Village could not operate without the support and dedication of community volunteers. Whether you have an artistic talent that you would like to share or would like to get involved, volunteering with Benissa’s Village is the perfect opportunity to give back to the community while enjoying and supporting the arts. STEM Explorers Club – 7 Week Program

Program Overview

STEM Explorers Club

A 7-Week Hands-On Science Program

Develop observation skills
Form & test hypotheses
Explore chem, bio, physics & engineering
Record findings in a journal
Build confidence through discovery

WEEK 01

Slime Science

Make slime from glue, baking soda & contact solution.

polymers chemical reactions states of matter material properties
  • Understand how polymers form
  • Compare liquid & solid properties
  • Adjust recipes & observe changes

Why does the glue change texture? Is slime a solid or a liquid? What happens when ingredients change?

Extension Test which slime recipe stretches the farthest.

WEEK 02

Explosive Chemistry

Elephant toothpaste using hydrogen peroxide.

catalysts exothermic rxns oxygen production
  • Observe rapid chemical reactions
  • Learn how catalysts speed reactions
  • Measure reaction height & volume

What gas is being produced? Why does the foam grow so quickly? Where are catalysts used daily?

Safety Goggles required · adult supervision for peroxide handling

WEEK 03

Density Lab

Homemade lava lamps.

density immiscible liquids gas formation
  • Predict which substances sink or float
  • Observe density differences
  • Explain why oil & water separate

Why doesn’t oil mix with water? Why do bubbles rise & fall? What other liquids behave similarly?

Extension Build a density column with more liquids.

WEEK 04

Soda Science

Mentos & Coke geyser.

nucleation gas release physical vs chemical
  • Understand how dissolved gases behave
  • Compare variables affecting eruption height
  • Practice scientific measurement

Why do Mentos cause the reaction? Is this a chemical reaction? What variables affect eruption height?

Extension Test different soda brands.

WEEK 05

Color Detectives

Chromatography & color-science tie-dye.

pigments solubility separation
  • Chromatography investigation
  • Analyze separated colors
  • Design & create tie-dye shirts

What colors hid inside the marker? Why did some colors travel farther? How do scientists use chromatography?

→ forensic scientist → chemist → env. scientist

WEEK 06

Engineering & Electricity

Simple circuits & motorized cars.

electricity energy transfer design process
  • Build a working circuit
  • Understand conductors & insulators
  • Design & improve a motorized vehicle

Why does electricity need a complete path? How can we improve the car’s performance? What problems did we encounter?

Challenge Longest distance traveled, or fastest car.
→ electrical eng. → robotics eng. → auto designer

WEEK 07

Micro World Explorers

Microscope study of lake water & hand-dirt samples.

microorganisms cells observation
  • Collect samples
  • Create slides
  • Observe & sketch findings
  • Discuss microorganisms & ecosystems

What surprised you? What differences exist between samples? Why are microorganisms important?

→ biologist → microbiologist → env. scientist
